ADVENTURE REQUIRES MISTAKE
Ansu Lake
Life is an adventure, which takes you to enormous heights, spectacular lows and places you never knew existed on the face of this planet. If you ask any person residing in Karachi, to which extent they have seen Pakistan, they will either say they have been to Lahore and Islamabad or no place at all. But for me the real beauty of Pakistan lies where high mountains are, covered with snow and offering a scene for your life that you wont be able to push aside.
My background links me to a very noble and adventurous family. I went on my first Pakistan tour by road from Karachi upto Kalam at Swat valley by car when I was just three months old and since then every year I visit different places of Pakistan and I love it!
Another thing that links me to adventure is me being the world’s youngest female mountain climber going at the height 18,600 feet above sea level. Wondering how that happened? Let me tell you in detail from the start.
My elder sister Maria and I have always been the greatest fans of our Dad because he never seems to run out of his adventure and expedition stories and about things he was able to do at our age, not that he would ever let us do the same but under his supervision we feel pretty safe.
In the year 2003 we all planed our yearly tour to the northern areas of Pakistan. By we I mean, my Mom, Dad, my elder sister, my younger sister and my younger brother. My dad and my elder sister made plans for an excursion of Ansoo Lake which is situated just opposite Malka Parbat (Queen of Mountains) at Kach Galli a full day walk from Lake Saiful Maluk (10, 500 feet above sea level) near the town of Naran in valley of Kaghan.
The name ‘Ansu Lake’ is given to this lake due to it’s shape which looking just like a tear and is situated in the mist of high mountain range at the height of 18,600ft above sea level and due to its location and all the year round rapidly changing weather conditions in Kach Galli area, no female ever had been able to go there before, many tried e.g. expeditions from Germany, Italy & Spain of female mountain climbers tried but the mighty winds blowing from all sides, heavy snow and rain made them retreat and go back.
We had to spend the night at Lake Saiful Maluk because we had to leave very early the next morning. In this excursion, I hadn’t made any plans. So, we woke up shivering before sun rise and had a very heavy breakfast at the local and only restaurant at Lake Saiful Maluk. The thing that astonished me was they were open this early, we also hired a professional guide for our excursion who was also my dad’s old friend’s son since 1984. We had to hire horses and pony for the excursion too for the journey from Lake Saiful Maluk to the Base Camp of Malka Parbat and Ansu lake,
Leaving my family behind at Saiful Maluk, my father, my elder sister and me started our journey, it took us five hours to reach the base camp and from there, we took a short break and rested for an hour to adjust bodies with the low oxygen level and high altitude of the base camp (14,500 ft above sea level) which is very important for mountain climbers to prevent suffocation and altitude sickness which can even result into death if not considered carefully.
Here was where the climb started after an hour’s climb, my father felt sick due to his high blood pressure and high altitude, we had to stop.
My dad could not go any further as it was too risky pushing further for him and he suggested we turn back too as he knew that he was the only one amongst us experienced enough and the team leader but then he decided to let us go up seeing my sister and I were very anxious to explore Ansoo Lake, my father headed back to base camp and waited there for us to come back safely and we continued.
At least three and half hours of back-wrecking phony rides, slippery snow climbs and rock climbing under the blistering winds and rain, passing through the rough water streams we at last reached Ansu Lake.
Only one glance at Ansu lake made us forget about all the tiredness of the journey, we rested for a while, had our lunch and headed back.
This was when the real trouble started because now we had to slide down on glaciers and we lacked the experience and knowledge to know where exactly the glacier might collapse, good thing we had the guide and with God by our side, we some how actually managed to successfully descended from the summit and reach the rock area away from the snow, this was where I had altitude sickness attack due to the fast descent from higher altitude of 18,600 feet, I couldn’t breath properly and almost fainted. My sister got really worried about me, I tried to back her up and we continued our journey back to base camp while I was feeling really dizzy.
We reached base camp rather quickly as we were descending now from the summit to a lower altitude where my father was waiting for our return and then headed back towards lake Saiful Maluk to announce everybody, specially my mom and my younger brother and sister that we have made it.
Back at Naran, no one could believe us that a 13 year old and a 17 year old sisters had concurred Ansoo Lake so we had to get the pictures developed that we took at Ansoo lake and showed them as approve so that they would agree.
My sister and I being only 13 years old youngest climber besides my sister who 17 years old at that time were the ever first females mountain climbers in the world. We were inducted in record books at Naran, interviewed by a local adventure tourism magazine named ‘Visit Pakistan’.
It was all unbelievable but after all… adventures are only done by people who have the courage, will and the ability to make the difference! |
