night camped on the surface of the Baltoro. This is a shorter and less tiring stage than the preceding one, and it leads to the most renowned cirque of the Karakoram, where the Godwin Austenglacier flows into the Baltoro from north. The name, which commemorates the splendid place de la Concorde in Paris, takes its name from its counterpart in the heart of the Bemese Oberland. From Gore, the track at first moves to the right bank of the glacier, and then returns to its center, where it runs over a number of fairly lofty and quite lengthy ice ridges. You then continue almost on a level as far as Concordia 49000 meters, directly after another military base. To the north you can finally see K2. The vista, dominated by Broad Peak 8047 m an the massif of the Gasherbrums, also includes Chogolisa 7628 m and the Golden Throne 7312 m. From the south, the slender Mitre Peak looms over the camp. Day 09: CONCORDIA K2 BASE CAMP
Day excursion to K2 Base Camp. The final stage in this trek (which a number of groups undertake as a day outing, returning to Concordia for the night) leads to the base of K2, at an elevation of nearly 5000 metres. The beauty of the sites through which the moderately long trail runs – K2’s perfect proportions make it seem smaller and closer than it actually is – lead many to underestimate this trek, which is exhausting, among other reasons, because of the altitude, which comes close to 5,000 meters. Start by skirting a series of enormous crevasses, and continue over the left-hand moraine of the Godwin Austen glacier, as far as Broad Peak Base Camp of K-2 or towards Chogolisa where one can see Hidden Peak and its sister Masherbrum II. As you approach K2, you look back to Concordia and see the zebra-striped glaciers sweeping round the comer and disappearing down the baltoro. Stop for lunch at Broad Peak Base Camp. Camp will be pitched at about 5,000 metres. Meals & overnight in the Camp.
